It seems as though our lives just become busier and busier. Modern society makes new demands on us that have never before been experienced. You wake up too early, get the kids dressed and off to school, go to a job at which you work to hard for too little money, come home to cook dinner and go to bed and wake up the next day to do it all again. We barely have enough time for ourselves, let alone think about tasks and things that aren’t immediately essential.
Given the number of different people who are screaming for your limited attention and time, its a wonder how anyone ever gets anything done that isnt completely essential. One unfortunate bi-product of the intensity of our lives, though, is that sometimes we resultantly neglect tasks and issues that are actually quite important.
An element of our daily lives that we often overlook is that of our own home security. Frankly, it’s not something that we frequently think about. In the news, we constantly hear about homes getting burgled, and people becoming victimized, but we never think that it will happen to us. Unfortunately, though, the reality is that the worst case scenario could happen to any one of us, and it behooves us to be prepared.
While I realize that you may not have too much time to think about things like this, when you actually objectively look at how well your home is protected, I think you’ll be unpleasantly shocked at the conclusions you reach about how easily a break-in could occur. But there’s a silver lining; I can give you some tips to beef-up your home security with relatively little time and money.
One of the quickest things to do is to examine the state of the locks on your doors. If you’re like most homeowners, they probably haven’t been changed since you moved in. While the same old lock that you’ve had since 1987 might still function, there are some strong arguments for why it might be in your best interest to change it out for a newer model.
In recent years, industrial techniques and technology have improved drastically. The market is now flooded with cheaper, better, more efficient products than ever before, which is wonderful for consumers and for the market. Of course, in the reverse angle, criminals have become significantly more educated, and now have better tools and skills of their own to thwart more advanced securities; in other words, the same lock which five years ago would have been just fine, is now dated and inefficient.
If you’re looking for another great, inexpensive way to improve your security, check your secondary access points, like windows and crawlspaces. While these areas seem inconvenient to get to and are little though of by homeowners, they can provide an initial entry point for burglars into your home. By simply maintaining or replacing your window locks, you decrease your likelihood of being victimized.
I am a realist about security, and I understand that most homeowners are not going to take extensive measures to upgrade their security. There simply isnt the money or the time, regardless of the benefit in terms of safety. But I do believe that by enacting a few very simple measures, you can greatly increase the effectiveness of your current lock setup.
